Jonathan Veitch: A College President With A Drive For Progress
Jonathan Veitch currently serves as the president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. In addition, Veitch is a college administrator and author. He even worked as former professor. Jonathan was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, where his father, John Veitch, served as the president of Columbia Pictures. Growing up, he attended Loyola High School and later went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature from Stanford University. He even went on to earn a doctoral degree from Harvard University in the History of American Civilization.
Ever since Jonathan Veitch became the fifteenth president of Occidental College on July 1 of 2009, he has only been consistently striving to improve the campus. Soon after he was elected as president of the college, Jonathan enacted what he called a ‘strategic planning process’ that would make Occidental stronger by improving it’s arts, global literacy, and civic engagement programs. Under his leadership, new partnerships have been created, one of which resulted in the revamping of the historic Swan Hall, which currently houses over one third of the college’s faculty members.
Veight also directed the construction of the Samuelson Alumni Center, a place where alumni gatherings and assemblies will be held. There are also currently a lot of renovation projects under construction that Jonathan is leading as well, including: the McKinnon Family Center for Politics and Global Affairs, and the Johnson Student Center.
Veight is also passionate about conserving energy. In 2013, Jonathan Veight installed a 1 megawatt solar array (one of the largest in Los Angeles), that will create about eleven percent of the college’s electrical usage yearly.
Indeed, Jonathan Veight is truly passionate about bringing progress to Occidental College. He is actively directing construction and renovation projects, and is constantly striving to improve the college’s academic programs. He is a passionate leader who only has, and will continue to have an incredible impact on the future of the college.
As well as his work at Occidental College, Jonathan Veight is an award winning author. Published in 1997, American Superrealism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s, fits perfectly within Veight’s scholarly studies. During his time as a professor at The New School, he specialized in cultural history, American film, and American History.
Jonathan Veitch and his wife (Sarah Ann Baxter Kersh) currently reside in the President’s House on Occidental campus with their three children.
