Dr. Avi Weisfogel’s impact on Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a disorder where a person’s breathing stops and starts during sleep due to the back of the throat collapsing during sleep, which blocks the airway. A lack of oxygen might result in poor sleep and daytime fatigue. Major symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring or choking during sleep. Sleep apnea also leads to an increased risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
Dr. Weisfogel graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Weisfogel serves as a co-owner and business instructor at Dental Sleep Masters. Dr. Weisfogel has worked for over 15 years building a successful career as a dental practitioner and sleep dentistry specialist. Check out Avi’s educational video below.
One way to treat sleep apnea is through the use of a CPAP machine. These machines include a mask that comes over the nose and mouth. It provides constant airflow by keeping the airway open. CPAP machines also track breathing changes, which are used to help determine if additional treatments may be needed for the patient.
A travel CPAP is another version of a traditional CPAP. Travel devices are considered smaller because they don’t need a humidifier. To determine which machine to get, make sure to read the reviews, as well as talk to your respiratory therapist.
An oral appliance can also be a benefit during sleep. The appliance can hold the jaw forward to help keep an open airway. An oral appliance must be comfortable for the user. A prescription from a doctor is required to get the oral appliance.
Nasal Value Therapy helps redirect air to create resistance on the exhale that in turn creates pressure in the back of the throat. This will help keep the airway open. Use Nasal Value Therapy for a few nights before you are comfortable and confident enough to travel with it.
Please be sure to bring your prescription for the CPAP device, as well as a letter of medical necessity. That way, you will be prepared if the flight crew asks if the device is necessary. Don’t forget to bring an extra battery in case of an emergency. Avi recently set up a GoFundMe Campaign benefiting Operation Smile.
